An unnamed man developed a ‘phantom pregnancy’ after having sex with a man. The 52-year-old had to be hospitalised after he kept insisting he was carrying a child in.From Kozhikode in India, the unemployed father of two, said he could feel the baby moving inside and refused to listen to doctors who told him men could not get pregnant, in siting on bed rest and skipped labour-intensive work.
According to Times of India, he claimed he must have conceived after he’s had sex with a man. His worried brother took him to a hospital after he developed nausea and curbed his food intake. His brother told mystified doctors that the strange delusion started around six months ago.
Dr PN Suresh Kumar surveyed his case and said he hadn’t seen anything like it before.
‘He was an active homosexual in his adolescent years which may contributed to his beliefs. But, his homosexuality did not affect his marriage,’ the doctor said.
‘Usually, we see couvade syndrome [phantom pregnancy] in some dads-to-be who show certain symptoms of pregnancy (like nausea, weight gain or sleep problems) when their partners get pregnant.’
The patient, who has a postgraduate degree, went for counselling and took risperidone (an antipsychotic) which cured the ‘delusion’, He said.
‘After a series of counselling sessions, he stopped indulging in homosexual activities,’ he added.
‘Now, the patient is recovering and we are measuring his progress during periodic check-ups.’
