Chloe Grace Moretz has responded to the controversy surrounding that Kim Kardashian’s nude selfie after becoming embroiled in the debate on Twitter.
When Elle Magazine asked the American actress what compelled her to speak about Kim’s post, Moretz explained that she was hoping people would see the bigger picture. “All I’ll say is that I think a lot of things can be misconstrued in a lot of ways,” she told the mag.
“And I think if people open their minds more, and they try to look deeper into something than just something that is a very big, hot, fiery button to hide behind … I think if people looked into something bigger that I was trying to speak upon, they wouldn’t be so easy to fire back silly, miscellaneous things.”
“Depict yourself adequately as what you want to be seen as,” Moretz added.
Kardashian-West’s photo prompted a surge of debates over sexual empowerment and body image, with Moretz triggering controversy when she first retweeted Bette Midler’s tweet about how Kim would need to swallow a camera to show fans something new. Moretz then tweeted at the Kanye West’s wife, “I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies.” Kardashian later sniped back at the teen: “Let’s all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one knows who she is. your nylon cover is cute boo.”
After being accused of “slut shaming”, Moretz replied, “There’s a huge difference in respecting the platform that you’re given as a celebrity and ‘slut shaming’ something I never have done and would never do”.
